Two-time Finnish rally champion Jarno Pentinpuro is entering a new phase in his rally career. His first competition abroad now lies ahead.

Jarno Pentinpuro from Lumijoki, who won both the Junior category and the SM5 class Finnish Rally Championship last year, has planned this year’s rally calendar with the future in mind. The next step will take place at the end of May, when Pentinpuro competes in his first rally outside Finland. The honour goes to Rally Kjellerup in Denmark, a round of the Nordic Rally Championship series.

- We became interested in asphalt events because we still wanted to make use of our own car while also developing our driving and learning something new. Denmark was selected for the calendar based on its location and timing. In addition, some members of our team already have experience from there, and we know the atmosphere is good, so it’s a pleasant place to go, Pentinpuro explains about the background to the decision.

Pentinpuro will compete in the event with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, with Juho-Ville Koskela serving as co-driver.

- Unfortunately, we won’t be able to do a test before the rally, but Juho-Ville and I did some pace note practice a week ago. I also competed in an asphalt rally in Suomusjärvi at the beginning of May as a test event, says Pentinpuro.

The asphalt-based Rally Kjellerup consists of a loop of three special stages driven three times, making a total of nine special stages. Pentinpuro is the only Finnish driver in the event.

- It’s difficult to set concrete goals. We know the front runners will be very competitive, as the rally is also part of the Danish Championship series and there are experienced asphalt drivers competing there. The goal is to complete a clean rally without problems. We’re going there to deliver our best performance, develop our driving, and gain experience in different conditions and on this type of road.

- Close competition is always enjoyable and helps you improve, so hopefully we’ll get that. Then we’ll see how far up the results sheet we can reach.
